Member-only story
Almost a decade ago, a friend of mine was contemplating taking a job that they knew they didn’t want but by all accounts was a “successful first job.” they went back and forth and eventually, even though everyone (including me if I am being honest) told them to take the job, turned it down.
Instead, they started a career as a teacher. Today, they’ve built a successful school from scratch in their hometown and they’ve literally impacted the lives of thousands of children and teenagers in their community.
It’s so incredibly inspiring to see them doing this work, and while I know for a fact that it has not been easy, every step of the way it’s been a joy to watch them because they areplaying the game that they aremeant to be playing, and they are absolutely crushing it.
Every time I see something they do, I think to myself, it’s so incredible to see someone play the game they are meant to be playing and absolutely crush it.
Thankfully, they found the game they were meant to be playing, and got into the game mostly through their own self-awareness and grit. But this is something I think leaders can adopt too as they think about their employees.
In a best case scenario, we discover the game we are meant to be playing, and we get the chance to play it, just like my friend.
